The GloFouling Partnerships Project has officially concluded in May, marking the end of 6.5 years of pioneering global collaboration to tackle the transfer of invasive aquatic species through biofouling.
Launched in 2019 and implemented by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) with funding and support from GEF and UNDP, the project brought together 12 Lead Partnering Countries, 14 Partnering Countries, regional bodies, industry stakeholders, academic and scientific institutions and other organizations in a shared effort to address one of the most pressing biosecurity challenges facing the oceans.
Key achievements include:
Strengthened national policy and institutional frameworks in over 20 countries
40 national training courses delivered to more than 1,500 stakeholders
15+ technical publications produced for governments and industry
$68 million in co-financing mobilized
Establishment and growth of an active Global Industry Alliance for Marine Biosafety
Organization of three global R&D Forums and Exhibitions
Implementation of pilot demonstrations on innovative biofouling solutions
Delivery of 26 webinars, 4 documentaries, side events and over 100 media pieces to raise awareness
Increased female participation in technical activities, supported by targeted gender workshops and publications
GloFouling is also recognized as a flagship initiative: It is cited in the 2023 Revised Biofouling Guidelines and in the MEPC 83 proposal to develop a legally binding instrument on biofouling management.
Beyond the numbers, the project fostered meaningful connections across countries, sectors, and disciplines. It was a space to exchange knowledge, build partnerships, and create lasting memories.
While the project comes to a close, its legacy lives on through the ongoing TEST Biofouling Project and future initiatives under consideration.
